This was a fun and fairly quickie. I was given this 2×4 that was used to screed some concrete (use it to flatten the top of a patch of wet concrete) at one time and after use it was not cleaned so there was a lot of hardened concrete on it. Needless to say, it was headed to the dumpster as a result. I rescued it and spent some time with a hammer and cold chisel removing the concrete. Then using a belt sander to get as much of the embedded sand/concrete out of the wood fibers as I could.
I was a little worried about harming any of my saw blades that I might be using on it. But it all worked out OK. After it was clean enough I proceeded to cut up the single board into the parts need to make the short stool you see in the photo. It’s a perfect height for me to use at the workbench and when not in use it slips under the workbench out of the way. A handy little thing to have around.
Dry fitting with some clamps before gluing to make sure it all fits together as it should. And I had to set the seat up there to see how it would look even though I still needed to cut it into a circle.
All glued up and all the corners rounded over. I took this while taking a break from all the sanding.
I chose a Golden Oak wood stain which was a bit more yellow than I would have liked, but it’s a shop stool so no worries there. After this dried, I put on a generous coat of polyurethane. I still need to get a photo of the final HIGH GLOSS finish that’s on it. I do like a shiny stool. LOL
